‘KOMLA’, meaning forest, is made from paper derived from wood.
In COCOO’s Kyoto–Nishijin workshop, each piece is hand-finished by artisans who apply Urushi—a natural lacquer extracted from trees and thinned with special oils—layer by layer, allowing it to penetrate the paper before being cured with heat.
Urushi, a natural lacquer derived from the sap of trees native only to East Asia, has a history tracing back to the Jomon period. Renowned for its waterproof, durable, and antibacterial qualities, it has long been applied for aristocratic furnishings, in the aesthetics of the tea ceremony, and in everyday utensils for common households.
By applying the lacquer through a distinctive process, ‘KOMLA’ achieves a rare balance: made from natural materials yet resistant to heat and pressure, washable, and reusable. Weighing only 14 grams, it is lightweight, stackable, and designed as a practical paper cup that seamlessly fits into modern lifestyles.
